Cooksbridge Level Crossing Upgrade

Cooksbridge Level Crossing Upgrade

The Network Rail works to upgrade the level crossing at Cooksbridge are about to enter the final testing and commissioning phase, culminating in the entry into service of the new level crossing installation controlled from Three Bridges on Monday 11th March 2019.

To facilitate these works, the following arrangements will be in place at Cooksbridge level crossing:

  • From 02:00 Saturday 2nd March 2019 until 02:00 Monday 4th March 2019 there will be a full closure of the A275 road whilst the Level Crossing is taken out of use. During this closure, new bases and barrier machines will be installed as well as a new lighting column. There will be controls for pedestrian access across the level crossing for safety reasons while work is undertaken - a pedestrian diversion route will also be in place to utilise the station footbridge and arrangements will be put in place to escort those with impaired mobility across the level crossing. Road traffic diversions will be in place via the A272, A26 and B2192.
  • From 02:00 Monday 4th March 2019 until 06:00 Saturday 9th March 2019 the road traffic will be managed through conventional traffic light signals, which will manage the flow of traffic whilst the railway line also remains open. During this time the footpath on the Lewes side of the level crossing will be closed with Network Rail personnel on site to make sure this is safely managed. When necessary, assistance will also be provided to those who require it to cross the A275, particularly anyone with impaired mobility.
  • From 06:00 Saturday 9th March 2019 until 04:00 Monday 11th March 2019 there will be a full closure of the A275 road whilst the new barriers are tested and white lining is applied to the level crossing road surface. There will be controls for pedestrian access across the level crossing for safety reasons while work is undertaken - a pedestrian diversion route will also be in place to utilise the station footbridge and arrangements will be put in place to escort those with impaired mobility across the level crossing. Road traffic diversions will be in place via the A272 and A26. Once testing is completed the normal operation of the level crossing will resume.

Activities likely to cause the most noise impact to local residents will be undertaken during the weekend of 2nd / 3rd March, however Network Rail will take care to mitigate this as far as practicable.

To provide a visual impression of the upgraded level crossing installation at Cooksbridge, Network Rail have produced a video which can be viewed here:  Cooksbridge Level Crossing Video
